Carnival of Souls Book by Melissa Marr Review

carnival of souls
In a city of daimons, rigid class lines separate the powerful from the power-hungry. And at the heart of The City is the Carnival of Souls, where both murder and pleasure are offered up for sale. Once in a generation, the carnival hosts a deadly competition that allows every daimon a chance to join the ruling elite. Without the competition, Aya and Kaleb would both face bleak futures–if for different reasons. For each of them, fighting to the death is the only way to try to live.
All Mallory knows of The City is that her father–and every other witch there–fled it for a life in exile in the human world. Instead of a typical teenage life full of friends and maybe even a little romance, Mallory scans quiet streets for threats, hides herself away, and trains to be lethal. She knows it’s only a matter of time until a daimon finds her and her father, so she readies herself for the inevitable. While Mallory possesses little knowledge of The City, every inhabitant of The City knows of her. There are plans for Mallory, and soon she, too, will be drawn into the decadence and danger that is the Carnival of Souls.
From Melissa Marr, bestselling author of the Wicked Lovely series and “Graveminder,” comes a brand-new tale of lush secrets, dark love, and the struggle to forge one’s own destiny.

We all wear masks every day. Our masks consist of makeup and emotions, but in The City, the masks made of fabric and metal represent what you are, not who you are there. In The City, you are either a daemon and accepted, or a witch and executed. In the human realm, however, the roles change; daemons are executed and witches rule. Humans are to be kept in the dark about the secret world of magic and mayhem while it happens all around them.

Three characters’ lives are told in The City and the human realm. Unbeknownst to them, they will all intersect in the near future. Two strong females and one delicious male lead the way through this fascinating story about what happens when lust, love, and honor collide. Marr has once again pulled me into the lives of three individuals torn between the roles they have grown up in and the lives they want to have. I feel every emotion as Mallory, Kaleb, and Aya experiences them, no matter how painful or intense.

Melissa Marr has created another amazing world that pulls you in from the first page. The magic and mystery that is created between the covers of this book leave you wanting more, and with each turn of the page getting exactly what is needed. Inspired by a song, this “accidental” story will sweep you off your feet and make you question which side you belong on.

This is a book you must experience and if you are a fan of Marr’s Wicked Lovely series, you will not be disappointed. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys paranormal and urban fantasies. I finished this book and am now yearning for more. I guess the main question to ask is what mask would you wear in the Carnival of Souls?
